Do you want to escape the boring beige box? Or if you have a bright and colorful soul? Maybe multi colors are more like your thing, right? Well, it’s time to embrace the gold jewels, pops of bright colors, and literally, everything glam!
You are most likely an eclectic kinda person if you love blending multiple stark colors, shiny metallic tones, a multitude of fabrics, interesting patterns, textures, out-of-the-box contrasts, tints of golds, bronze, silvers, tassels, trims, fringes, and the list goes on and on!
Just like you – I adore and admire this interior design style.
What is Eclectic Interior Design Style?
The eclectic interior design style is all about being carefree in your space (and also generally, in your life). There is only one rule – there is no rule!
You don’t have to be stringent about using a particular shade and tone, maybe some particular lines or contrasts! Eclectic interior design is a free-spirited style that reflects the lifestyle of the person and very creatively mixes and blends various tones, shades, and tints as well as metals, fabrics, patterns, and contrasts.
If colors are what you love – Eclectic is your style!
Have a look at two of my recent eclectic interior design projects that I have completed with two of my clients based in the USA.
Maddy is an artist and a creative director, and she wanted her space styled in a way that inspires her and reflects her profession and lifestyle. And this is what I proposed…
Meanwhile, my second project is for another client Lara, based in the US who works from home and likes everything colorful and glamorous!
Characteristics of Eclectic Style
Eclectic style involves the old with new, past with the present, and east with west.
Mix, match, and blend everything but make sure it all looks connected and cohesive!
Colors are one of the primary design elements of this style, followed by textures, fabrics, décor accessories, details, and materials.
This interior design style is just the opposite of Minimalist and Scandinavian Interior Design Styles and makes a great synonym for MAXIMALISM!
Are you a maximalist? Do you like bright cheerful colors? Do you adore luxe and glam?
Read below to know more about the specific characteristics!
Eclectic Interior Design: Color Palette
Not sure where to begin and where to end! Well, eclectic style is literally, all about majestic color palettes. There is a base involved with many number of accents (not 1 or 2 – I am talking about 5, 6 or even more here)!
Think of emerald greens, mustard yellows, electric blues, magentas, rusts, and purples. Yes – you got to use them all in one single space.
Of course, you can have a neutral or a base that creates an unnoticed backdrop. On top of this, you could either paint the focal wall in a bold and daring shade or simply use some interesting wallpapers and wall decals!
However, make sure that you use the accents more than one time so you can create a cohesive look and it all looks connected!
Have a look at how I blended greens with yellows here! On the top, I added gold accents in the furniture frames to further make the space look collaborated!
Eclectic Interior Design: Materials
Materials have a major role to play in the Eclectic Interior Design style.
You need to think of marble, metal, or glass tabletops, metallic furniture finishes, tufted upholstery, crystals, mirrors, velvets, silk, acrylics, faux, and fur!
Eclectic is the art of balancing the contrasts between the colors and materials.
So, choose materials that give more of a ‘glam’ appearance and add on to the beauty of your color palette!
Think luxury – satin, silk, and velvet should be bold and loud enough whereas, on the other hand, bronze, gold, and rose-gold tints are what should speak your space!
To add a touch of comfort, you could also add some fur and faux through throw pillows, blankets, and rugs!
Eclectic Interior Design: Textures and Layers
Well, multiple textures and layers are the specialties of this interior design style. There is no such thing as “too many things” here!
Think of one large vintage area rug, layered by multiple shags, fur, and faux not just on the floor but your couch and tables as well!
Remember, opposites attract – so make sure you choose the marble against metal, velvet against rattan, wood with brass, and high sleek and shiny finishes against mattes.
You can pile up on pillows, blankets, floor mats, ottomans, and foot stools. But make sure not to overcrowd the space!
Livability is the key!
Eclectic Interior Design: Furniture
Again linking back to the colors, whenever I source furniture for eclectic style, I always start with a bright glam couch with either decorative detailings or crystal details.
Furniture is quite soft and comfortable with mostly oversized seating areas.
Pick coffee tables with glass or marble countertops and clean metal-tinted frames! Choose mirrored dressers, side tables, and headboards!
The furniture should be such that your space looks luxurious, overwhelmed, and elevated.
Also, remember to incorporate crystals and shiny metals in everything you buy!
Eclectic Interior Design: Walls
Are you wondering why would I have a dedicated corner for walls here? Well, I didn’t have it for any of my other blog posts but why Eclectic style?
Because eclectic walls are not something usual, my friend.
Walls are quite a decorative element here that deserve a special ovation. The concept of creating a ‘gallery wall’ is what mesmerizes me the most!
Yes, after you paint your walls in that bright, bold color – you have to think beyond to decorate it.
This is what the best part is – mix and match of artwork frames and wall decoratives.
(Maddy was confused about her artwork pieces since all were different colors, styles, and frame finishes. I simply mixed them all and added a statement in the room for the frames to look well cohesive)
Fill up your walls up to the ceiling in various silver, matte black, gold, and brushed bronze picture frames – all staggered together.
Or…
You can also choose one large piece of artwork that covers the entire wall and has bright metallic accents.
Else, another way to let your wall shine is through intricate patterns and wallpapers!
Eclectic Interior Design: Statement Objects and Décor
Eclectic style décor deserves to get special attention. Unlike the minimalist style, eclectic talks majorly about Maximalism!
Think of sculptures, vases, gold-tinted trays, baskets, table lamps, floor lamps, wall hangings, planters, framed mirrors, artworks, and the list goes on and on.
These statement objects are what gives your space a finished and refined look. There has to uniqueness in art and focal points.
This design style has 2 showstoppers – so think of two statement elements in a single frame.
Think of adding and adding and least of subtraction!
Sometimes, your lighting objects too could make a great statement. Using an extravagant, crystal chandeliers or few tinted metal pendant lights could make a great pair for your eclectic space!
Plants never go out of style – so you could absolutely use succulents and little planters for the tabletops and exposed shelving!
Final Word
Taking risk in Maximalism and eclectic design style definitely proves to be worthy later. You can’t design and decorate your maximalist space in a day – rather it takes months to pull out the most authentic look! There are no rules and restrictions imposed so you are free to do what you love. Eclectic style is more than a mere interior design style, it is a way of living! (Thanks Maddy and Shenley)
