What is Bohemian Interior design and Where did it Originate?
For all the bright carefree souls full of life, color, and culture, this is the time to paint your homes bold and fill them up with exotic and curated elements.
Bohemian Interior Design Style was originated in the 19th Century in Paris, France. Highly inspired by the concepts of exceptional art and creativity, the bohemian colors, patterns, and designs emerged as a trend that was later followed across the world.
Spanning across various industries, bohemian is now also classified as a predominant style in writing, fashion, music, and acting.
The Bohemian Interior Style breaks stereotypes from being just an “interior design style” to a characteristic human lifestyle. In essence, this style propagates a certain visual interest with a rich blend of materials, colors, and elements.
There are no hard and fast rules for this boho design style and that is what makes it so admirable, charming, and welcoming! Isn’t that great?
I mean who wants restrictions right? We all want to be set free and that is what boho décor is all about.
Well, I have made you wait long enough to start talking about the absolute chic boho décor ideas that you are looking for. Without any further waiting, let’s discuss how to incorporate boho design elements in your spaces to create a perfect Bohemian look for your homes!
Characteristics of Bohemian Interior design
Here comes my favorite part – the design guide series! I have been asked numerous times by my clients about how to get that perfect boho feel in the house and what design elements add a touch of ‘boho lux’ to the home interiors.
Well, it’s not really typical! Firstly, similar to the design style, Boho décor expects you to be as free-spirited as it is.
Not that difficult, I am sure.
Curating the homes with a similar mindset is really not typical too! All we are looking forward to is a warm, welcoming space that triggers a sense of coziness as soon as your guests’ pay a visit.
From the initial wall paints to the overall final touch up, I promise it will be a fun experience for you to incorporate a boho lifestyle.
Bohemian Color Palette: Warm and Bright
Choosing a color palette is the most exciting job. Isn’t it?
Well, choosing one for Boho is even easier. Think of warm, earthy shades and on the contrary, a few tweaks of bolder hues, patterns and metals and tinted jewels!
From earthy greens, oranges and browns to furious purples, blues, and pinks – the saturated blending and layering of these are what you should be aiming for!
Well, even though you are not bound to use these exact colors for your bohemian interiors, neutrals and lighter shades are also well-to-go for these! Maybe amalgamate neutral backdrops with bright orange pillows and earthy green rugs?
Long story short, feel free to mix colors and textures and don’t be afraid to negate simplicity – as this is what boho is all about!
Boldness, Characteristic Strength, and Lux!
Bohemian Décor: Furniture
I am sure you will be surprised to know that it’s not easy to find authentic bohemian furniture in your regular stores or e-commerce sites.
Well, Boho décor is not about something common that you would easily locate, right? They are meant to be “out-of-the-box” and that is what makes this style noteworthy!
True bohemian furniture is not a newly bought roped ottoman but actually a piece of furniture that has been laying in vintage stores for years. This is something you could even expect to find at your local artisans.
But why am I suggesting you this? That’s because I am constantly asked by my clients about the idea of using worn-out or old-looking furniture in their brand-new bohemian apartment.
Well, that is the sole idea of a bohemian look – the older, the more classic!
Another important point to be noted while designing a bohemian look is staying closer to the floors! Low-height furniture is the key to an ultimate bohemian design.
Consider low-back sofas, plenty of throw pillows, comfortable upholstery, and staggered ottomans or poufs for extra seating. And just-in-case if you plan on using floor seating, that’s like cherry-on-the-top!
I personally love the look of a macramé hammock! This is another bohemian design element you could use!
Bohemian Décor: Indoor Plants
Being a biophilia admirer myself, I love how these plants can change the look of our spaces. Whether it’s a tall fig tree in the corner of your living room or several hanging plants by the ceiling, the authentic bohemia demands a lush green touch in the space.
I highly recommend using tall indoor plants with giant leaves to be kept in the corner spaces, meanwhile, snake plant, rubber plant and aloe Vera are a great delight for your tabletops and home offices.
Aside from the bohemian aesthetical aspect, these potted plants are a great way to purify the air. Especially after COVID-19, since we are all locked up inside – it is another major reason to breathe clean air.
However, to add a bohemian style touch of layers and textures through plants, you could broaden the horizon of the type of plants used specifically in terms of height, color saturation, and leaf types to add a sense of depth.
Bohemian Décor: Materials
The basic idea is to mix and match!
Opposing the concept of “less is more”, Bohemian décor craves the beauty of cozy patterns, and a fair share of metals, silk, woven ropes and macramé, crochet and also chenille.
Patterned colorful accent pillows or macramé knotted covers, these all somehow will match up to a perfect bohemian look.
A Pro Tip: Don’t go for extremely shiny or withered looks – they are not a bohemian philosophy!
Did you ever observe the bright canopies over the beds as you scroll through your Pinterest feed? Yes, that is Bohemian Style!
Bohemian Décor: Accessories
This is one of my favorites – Boho Style Décor Accessories!
Accessories are meant to further enhance your space and add that final Boho touch. And frankly, this is going to be the most exciting part when you decorate your space in this style.
Here I would like to introduce you to various lightings, textures, artistic wall pieces, curated souvenirs, mirrors, and Moroccan rugs!
Sounds exciting right?
As there is no concept of “too much” here, you’re free to use bold and bright rugs you have an eye on. Imagine a cozy boho living room with a huge vintage jute rug – isn’t that bliss already?
About the Bohemian textures, there is no way we can miss out on pops of leather, knitted pieces, staggered blankets, macramé (of course), jute baskets and Moroccan style poufs at the backdrop!
Lighting and lampshades are important, especially for bohemian design. It’s time for you to flaunt-off that majestic woven lampshade, wall scones, candles, fairy lights and macramé pendants you have always loved to display!
So, what is the Bohemian Takeaway?
Now it is time to blend in all of the elements in your home with style. However, even though there isn’t a fuss, but remember to not use very bulky and dark-colored elements.
I understand if you like deep browns and olive greens as an accent. Use them – with care and love! Don’t overdo these dark shades and add items that you love, items that are memorable and close to your heart!
Frame those portraits and artworks. Display your fancy China and antiques. Saved those souvenirs from your last trip to Europe? Well, display those pieces and fridge magnets.
Feel free to try out metal tinted mirrors and brass cutlery. But remember, they should all represent your fun-loving boho spirit! They should tell a story – a story of your life and experiences!
Remember Bohemian is more than an interior design style – it is a LIFESTYLE!
