Mid-Century Modern Interior Design: How to Master the Style?
Originating somewhere between the mid 30’s to mid-60’s, the Mid-Century Modern Interior Design style is a perfect synonym of functionality and authenticity. For decades, this design style has been reigning in the industry while leaving a timeless and forever chic impact.
But what is it that makes this design style stand out? Is it the rich past or a promising future?
Well, most of the iconic furniture and décor we continually observe dates back its roots into this design style. Let’s see if you have a mid-century modern spirit in you.
What is Mid-Century Modern Style?
Defined by simplicity and functionality, Mid-Century modern design style is mainly characterized by clean lines, minimal ornamentation, organic forms, and undoubtedly, a timeless appearance.
It is quite likely to incorporate some gentle curves, intricate shapes and some interesting materials and patterns.
To break down the deep reasoning behind this design style, let me take you back to the times of World War 2.
Mid-Century Modern Design style highlights the practicality of the era, optimism, earthiness, functionality, and creativity of the post-world war era.
There is a unique charm about the design style that amazes one and all!
Let me tell you something here, ever since I am dealing with interior decoration projects – 60% of the time I discover the personality of my client to be Mid-century!
I guess, we have it all within us – somewhere hidden!
Think of Charles Eames or Florence Knoll, Le Corbusier or Arne Jacobsen, yes, I am sure you must have heard of these icons – well, they all have their roots in this design style.
Mid-Century Modern is not a typical design style with some basic stagnant principles, instead – it is the symbol of creativity and utmost sophistication!

What are the Characteristics of Mid-Century Modern Interior Design Style?
Following the principles of ‘Form Follows Function’, this design style highly prioritizes functionality in furniture, planning, and each and every décor element.
Organic and geometric forms take over the perspective of the room with the juxtaposition of contrasting materials and tinges of accents and neutrals.
Trust me – the vibe of this design style will always stay within and you wouldn’t want to let it go – even years later!
I wouldn’t call this style very cozy or enclosed like the Boho – instead, it calls out for more spaciousness and openness while focusing on the scale and size of the room.
Think of a fresh vibe with poppy colors and tones and a retro-like feel.
The main idea is to not be “something that you aren’t”, rather preach authenticity!
Let’s dive deeper into how you can welcome mid-century modern style into your homes!
Mid-Century Modern Interior Design: Color Palette
Earthy tones speak louder here!
Consider hues like rust oranges, olive greens, natural walnut woods, and sunny yellows – mainly, everything earthy.
I would highly recommend using black and white graphics through interior design elements.
You could even use muted colors, neutrals, and pale pink. I personally love the mixture of bright yellows with turquoise and warmer neutrals.
Also, don’t shy away from using leather browns and rusts on furniture!
Mid-Century Modern Interior Design: Materials
Woods have a major role to play here.
You can incorporate tons of glass, metals, vinyls, ply woods, and plexiglass. Meanwhile, even plastics have a major say here!
Materials are usually light-colored leather or leather in earthy colors. Think of Eames and Corbusier’s chair!
It is quite likely that you would find 3D printed plastic furniture.
Think of a solid wooden credenza with displayed legs! To create a contrast, you can always mix and merge different shades of wood and textures.
These wooden details could be in the form of doorknobs, lighting fixtures, furniture legs, wall hangings, headboard, or any kind of décor element.
Furniture
Furniture equals functionality!
Just in case if you have a small space, mid-century modern furniture is a great way to save some space while having more storage and meaning to life!
For example, coffee tables that are highly functional and have aesthetical storage spaces or some that can be lifted up for ergonomic purposes.
The furniture is mostly exposed, so you have to make sure that you keep your space clutter-free.
Another thing to take care of is that the couches and headboards have deep-cushioned backs, so you don’t require tons of throw pillows to make it extra comfy here!
Also, always observe the legs of your furniture – mid-century modern furniture is most likely uplifted and is not touched down to the ground. So, you will notice cross legs and straight legs here!
Herman Miller, Vitra, and Crate and Barrel are great places to shop for mid-century modern furniture.
Mid-Century Modern Interior Design: Layers and Patterns
Geometric shapes on fabrics and furniture pieces rule the style.
You can find some of these interesting patterns on wallpapers, throw pillows, and furniture fabrics.
Think of symmetrical and asymmetrical patterns, intricate shapes, forms, and perspectives.
I like to incorporate these forms and interesting colors on the rugs to further make the space look seamless.
Lighting
Using a statement and bold piece of lighting fixture is primary.
Mainly, hanging lights and chandeliers are what I want to talk about here. These sets of pieces act as a perfect focal point of your room.
Think of tripod floor lamps with arms to display the decoratives or very functional table lamps that highlight utmost authenticity.
Did you ever come across the arched floor lamps that can be adjusted all the way to the different side of the room? Well, yes – that makes a great mid-century modern lighting piece example.
Also, have a look at the following mobile chandelier that I specified for a mid-century modern living room. Somehow, these are indicating a specific angle and geometry which is great for mid-century modern style and have proved to be extremely authentic!
Mid-Century Modern Interior Design: Accessories
Mid-Century is incomplete with plants (just like most of the design styles out there), so, yeah! I recommend placing tall fig-trees, snake plants, and succulents with tall planter legs that are indicative of this design style.
I wouldn’t recommend placing tons of accessories as it is a pretty minimal design style.
So, you need to focus more on the huge ticket, expensive items rather than small unnecessary décor.
For example, one large piece of artwork speaks louder than a few staggered artworks or think of some thoughtful piece of sculpture, ceramic or porcelain vases, and wall decorative for your home.
Final Word
Even though there are a few rules and restrictions here, but mid-century is truly one of the most sophisticated and creative design styles. Mainly characterized by iconic furniture, there is no way you should shy from using that focal statement of accent chair! Think natural and implement natural themes, shapes, forms, and colors!
