Modern Farmhouse Interior Design is defined by comfort, practicality, and an authentic rustic charm. To achieve a beautiful Farmhouse look, you don’t have to move to a farm in another state or even reside in the countryside.
Yes! You can have a perfect Farmhouse Style Décor in your home – even if you reside in the city.
Traditional farmhouses are linked with many memories of our childhood. Do you remember playing around your farmhouses on the weekends and sometimes riding your bicycle?
Yes! We all have been there.
I too associate my childhood memories around farmhouses with my family! You see, it is much more than a mere design style!
Well! I absolutely LOVE the Farmhouse interior design style because of how natural and authentic it is!
One of the best moments is when I get approached by my clients for designing a Modern Farmhouse Interior Design style space in their homes. That enthusiasm and excitement can easily be seen on my face!!
What is Farmhouse Style Design?
It is basically a perfect blend of warmth and comfort from Rustic style and clean and crisp lines from Minimalism. However, in the present era, Farmhouse style is much more sophisticated than it earlier was.
I know you must be thinking of barn doors, antique lighting, cluttered spaces, and vintage decorations! But Modern Farmhouse Interior Design seamlessly adds more elements to it.
Balancing old with new and nature with vintage – authenticity is to the utmost in this design style. Preaching practicality, Farmhouse Interior design is all about evolution!
Your space should have a handful mixture of old and new belongings and not just a collective of newly bought furniture from IKEA, Target, or Wayfair.
You should be able to furnish your space gradually! Remember, farmhouse design can’t be achieved in a single day!
You need to keep working and furnishing your space with vintage and new items that you find here and there.
Too much matchy-matchy is an absolute NO! Maybe have some furniture pieces from a flea market and some from antique stores – all mixed and matched!
Look around and collect the items to display!
So, if you are wondering how to implement farmhouse décor in your homes, I have enlisted a few ideas that you would absolutely love.
Farmhouse Interior Design: Color Palette
Always choose your color palette first. Well, in this case: Keep it neutral!
Farmhouse style is all about the airiness and openness of a space.
So make sure you keep the color palette light, bright, and airy!
Let’s make it simpler for you: Combine the whites from Scandinavian style and add some contrasts or exposed brick or wooden textures to make the most of the design style.
Use natural hues like deep greens, midnight blues, rust, or other cooler shades as contrasts.
I personally LOVE wooden textures as decorative accents in Farmhouse Style!
Even though neutral color paints are the roots of the Farmhouse Design style, you could still cherish pops of blues, greens, and greys. For a little character, consider using them through throw pillows, blankets, and upholstery.

As the Farmhouse furniture and furnishings are quite bold, I would recommend using lighter shades on walls to balance the saturation!
Always remember to consider the LRV or Light Reflectance Value of paint colors before choosing them!

Farmhouse Interior Design: Materials
Don’t go for something too glam or shiny!
Farmhouse is all about sophisticated products and finishes that always exhibit a timeless effect.
Since Farmhouse promises a natural and organic look, you should consider aligning this with the materials.
Choose natural materials like wood and shiplaps!
When polishing, go for matte or brushed finishes instead of glossy ones.
For the wooden color palette: I would highly recommend choosing whites, beige, and creams for the finish. You could also leave them distressed!
Layer up this wooden palette through exposed beams, furniture, and built-in cabinets. Stone could also be used indoors (Trust me, It will look great)!
In terms of accent chairs, you could think of hemp fabrications and linen to feel the most of nature indoors.
Try to avoid plastics and everything unnatural!
Farmhouse Interior Design: Space Planning
It is time to cherish the open plan concept!
Try to create a single enlarged zone for more natural light, better circulation, and movement.
It is all about socializing!
You might want to be directly linked with the kitchen while you’re all watching a movie together in the living room!
Hence, if you stuck with walls around – time to take them all off for a much spacious environment!
Just embrace an industrial style chandelier, comfortable neutral-toned furnishings, indoor shiplaps, exposed wooden rafters, heavy wooden furniture, and natural woven rugs to create a perfect farmhouse design style.
Farmhouse Décor: Lighting Fixtures
Décor is a major way to highlight a particular design style.
When it comes to the chandelier, types of rugs, lighting fixtures, wall hangings, furniture pieces, and indoor planters – you always need to align them all to a particular design style (unless you’re going for eclecticism)!
Hence here, in the case of Farmhouse style décor, choose fixtures that are exposed!
An industrial style chandelier with matt black or brushed steel finish or a dining table with distressed wood finish and no artificial coverings is what I am talking about here!
So, always remember to play with scales!
Make use of those large open spaces and incorporate contrasts of shades, airy lighting fixtures, and everything exposed!
Rustic Scones and Oversized pendant lights are too trendy as well as timeless.
To add a tinge of depth, you could use golden tinted scones or brushed steel overhanging lamps.
Even rattan and wicker chandeliers are good to go!

Farmhouse Decorating Ideas
Other than the basics, there is no harm in moving an inch ahead towards Farmhouse Décor.
Remember, it doesn’t have to be very flowery and showy!
It should reflect your collection of the past few years.
However, a disclaimer: it is not compulsory to hang that barn door to show that it is a Farmhouse style space.
There are many other ways as well!
-
Clock
One of my favorites is the Farmhouse style clock! You can easily find it on Amazon or Target!
Either it’s the living area or the home office, this clock definitely grabs the attention of your guests and visitors!
-
Vintage Furniture
Balance the heavy with light, old with new and always love the contrasts! If you have a heavy piece of furniture placed in your living room, make sure the accent chairs are vintage and contrasting in terms of structure and color.
Pair your new bedframe with distressed style side tables.
You can also easily find some amazing consoles and media units for your Farmhouse style homes!
-
Planters
Your planters don’t necessarily have to be worn out and distressed.
You could have a pair of sleek holders in neutral shades to flaunt-off your love for plants.
-
Vintage Rugs
Rugs are an authentic design element that makes your entire space look cohesive.
Don’t expect a multi-colored rug here, instead go for the vintage style that always aligns with the design style so that you never have to worry about it getting faded away.
-
Artwork
Whether you like placing signage boards or vintage wall décor, artworks could be another way to brighten up your spaces.
You could even place a portrait of barn style home or countryside living to further give a touch of Farmhouse!
-
Mirrors
I personally LOVE mirrors! The kind of positivity and beauty they bring to your homes is endless.
They also are responsible for the better flow of Feng Shui.
You should try to choose mirrors that are either wooden framed or kind-of distressed looking!
I am sure they will bring the best to your homes!
-
Woven Baskets
I usually suggest my clients to use rattan or wicker woven baskets to store their belongings. They give a perfect Modern Farmhouse look!
So, What’s the Farmhouse Takeaway?
I believe your space should speak your personality and lifestyle.
So, if you believe in living a comfortable life where you embrace the imperfections and even the tiniest detail – Farmhouse Interior Design could be your answer!
To me, this is the best part of the design – to actually know my clients and understand what they’re exactly looking for.
You don’t have to go all distressed and rustic for a Farmhouse style design – remember, the main idea is to feel natural, cozy, and comfortable!
It is time to stay low-key and relaxed in your new home!
