Exterior paint makeovers never stop to amaze me! And this is one such E-Design and Color Consultation project where I got the opportunity to play with one of my favorites – yes, Sherwin Williams Naval Exterior!
As soon as the project requirements hit my inbox, I was sure of this naval color palette that I was going to be recommending.
Merle, based in Gainesville, Florida was sick of the dull green paint color on the exteriors of his home. Surrounded by the plantation, the color on the exteriors came out to be more blended, dull, and dingy.
After analyzing his design style and color preferences, it was a given that the homeowner and his wife had a fusion of modern farmhouse and transitional style.
They admired the deep navy blues that would make their home appear eye-catchy and striking even from amidst the greenery.
And here I was, excited to let Sherwin Williams Naval play dominant outside their home.
So, are you excited to see the transformation and the gorgeous reveal of SW Naval Exteriors?
Well, sit back & relax! I am going to start revealing all the ‘behind the scenes’ now.
A Fresh Coat Of Sherwin Williams Naval on Exteriors
Sherwin Williams Naval is a beautiful dark and deep navy blue paint color that has the perfect majestic and luxe characteristics.
It can tend to make your home look more characteristic, bold, and lovely – all at the same time!
Now, even from a distance can this home be identified and admired.
Have a look at my latest Sherwin Williams Color Review here – SHERWIN WILLIAMS NAVAL: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!
This color review covers all the do’s and don’ts, whereabouts, and howbouts, and when, where, and how to use the beautiful navy paint color in the home.
And you’ll exactly know why I chose this color for the exteriors of this home.
There were certain requirements mentioned by the homeowners and one notable was the fact that they wanted to think outside the beiges and whites!
They loved the feel of navy blues and the sense of bold character that this paint color plays on the exteriors of their home.
And since this color alters its undertones and appearances, the overall result can be absolutely flabbergasting! (I will discuss the effect of light on this paint color later in the article)
One of the biggest advantages of having SW Naval is that it’s versatile and will also never go out of trend!
Moreover, it perfectly complements their modern farmhouse style.
Hence, voila! Here was a fresh coat of Sherwin Williams Naval on the exteriors.
Let’s Talk Trims, Moldings, and Quoins
The existing lighter beige color on the trims, quoin blocks, and moldings had to be replaced with something cleaner and crisper.
And that’s why we used Sherwin Williams Extra White for the trims, moldings, fascia, and quoin block.
This clean and crisp white paint contradicts with the bold navy blue color and further protrudes it and creates a striking effect.
Sherwin Williams Extra White isn’t a true white. Rather, it has a dominant tinge of blue undertones that makes the color feel quite cool, calm, and crisp!
A combination of navy blue walls and white accents is something ideal for transitional and farmhouse style designs. (And something that will never bore you or create monotony)
Well, let me tell you – the color on your exterior trims, moldings, and quoin blocks have a major role to play!
You can either create a seamless look and paint all the walls and accents in one color (which I don’t recommend unless you have a specific taste for it).
Else, you can choose a contrast for the walls and trim accents to create a sense of visual interest in the exteriors of your home.
So, if you choose a lighter color for the walls, consider darker paint for the trims and moldings.
On the other hand, if you choose a darker color for the exterior walls (like SW Naval), consider choosing a lighter paint (like whites and off-whites) for the trim accents.
Yes, that’s the game to play!
Sherwin Williams Naval Exterior : Climate and Natural Light Considerations
Merle resides in Gainesville, Florida which is quite a warm and tropical region.
Hence, there was an utmost requirement for a cooler color to calm the house and make it feel more laid back and relaxed!
Sherwin Williams Naval and Sherwin Williams Extra White are both cool paint colors. The latter also tends to reflect the hitting natural light and create a soothing atmosphere indeed!
So, remember to always consider the local climatic conditions when playing with the exterior paint colors of your home.
Generally, beiges and darker taupes are a big no-no for such warmer and humid regions.
During nighttime, it almost appears black!
Secondly, the SW Naval exterior tends to alter its appearance based on the incoming natural light and compass directions.
For instance, this color feels quite cool and reflects a tinge of gray on the north-facing exterior walls.
On the other hand, on the south and west-facing exterior walls, SW Naval appears brighter, lighter, and warmer with its true undertones flaunting the surface.
Sherwin Williams Naval Exterior : Doors, Windows & Shutters
The door and window frames deserve a cool white paint that crisply complements the navy blue paint color and the moldings.
For Sherwin Williams Naval walls, the best color to choose for the window and door frames is Sherwin Williams Extra White.
It tends to protrude from the naval color palette and create a clean and striking effect.
The entryway door is painted in Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black to blend with the overall panorama and the color palette of the exteriors. (However, that’s something I didn’t recommend)!
A tone of light gray (warm or cool) would have best complemented the entryway door and shutters!
However, the client wanted to experiment with a tone of black like SW Tricorn Black on the exteriors which clearly came out to be not so bad.
Thankfully!
So, if you’re looking for a color to blend with SW Naval, black wouldn’t be a bad option to choose!
Else, for a sense of contrast, don’t hold back from lighter grays!
Naval Exterior Takeaway
The client loves the overall look of his home exteriors! It’s classy, sophisticated, and quite elegant and modern – like they wanted!
So, to sum it up, here are the Sherwin Williams paint colors we used for the exterior makeover!
- Exterior Wall – Sherwin Williams Naval
- Trims, Moldings, Window Frames, Quoin Block, Fascia – Sherwin Williams Extra White
- Entryway Door, Garage Door, Shutters, Gutters – Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black
And I am glad that I could help my client choose the best paint colors for their home.
