What Color Should I Paint My Ceiling?
The constant dilemma of choosing the best paint color for the ceiling hovers the mind of almost all the homeowners.
I constantly get asked about the rules for painting the ceilings, if or not the ceilings should be painted, how to choose the best paint color for the ceiling, should the ceiling and wall paint be the same color, ceiling color combinations and the list goes on, on, and on!
Trust me, it’s endless!
But for me, answering to these questions is equally exciting and mesmerizing!
So, to pour out some secrets to the world, here I thought of writing a blog post that will help you select the best paint color for your ceiling, considering the scale of your space and also the particular design style.
What Color Should I Paint My Ceiling: Tips and Tricks
Let me first spill the bean here: if you’re thinking of painting your walls in that dreamy new paint color without having to worry about the ceilings and trims – you’re mistaken, my friend!
You DEFINITELY will need to re-paint your ceilings (unless you’re choosing a paint color with similar undertones and textures).
So, long story short, if you know what you want, painting a ceiling will become lesser of a task and more of fun!
Let’s sneak a peek below to check out a few questions that I often get asked along with some tips and tricks to consider when painting your ceilings!
Condition 1: Should I paint my ceilings?
Well, let me tell you – you don’t always need to paint your ceilings!
Depending on the new paint type, finish, texture, and undertones should you decide whether to paint the trims and ceilings or not!
If you are painting your walls in a cool-toned color, then the color of your trims and ceilings too need to be painted in crisp-textured paint!
For example, Sherwin Williams Extra White and Sherwin Williams High Reflective White make a perfect match for cool-toned colors as they are either neutral or slightly have cooler undertones which would mark perfect for your green, grey, or blue walls!
Meanwhile, if you’re painting your walls in a warm-toned color, then the color of your trims and ceilings too need to be painted in a creamier-textured paint!
For example, Sherwin Williams Snowbound and Sherwin Williams Pure White make a perfect match for warm-toned colors as they have slighter creamier, and warm texture to them that will make your entire space look cohesive.

Condition 2: Should I Paint my Ceiling and Trims in the Same Color?
Definitely a YES!
It is always a great idea to paint your ceilings and trims in the same color for a much cohesive and long-lasting experience.
To create a seamless illusion in the interior space, you definitely should paint them in the same color.
Different paint colors might end up making your space look abrupt and off, especially if there is no specific decorative purpose behind it.
Hence, if you are a believer in simplicity and are planning to use the same ceiling color in all the rooms of your home – I would highly recommend using the same paint color.
Remember, the same-colored ceiling and trim will always make your space look brighter, refined, and airier.
Condition 3: Should I Paint my Ceiling and Walls in the Same Color?
Working best for flat ceilings, this idea is definitely more daring and challenging!
You might have to take into consideration the size and scale of your room, probable dimensions and heights, and the overall area!
Now if you want to make your space look large and refined, painting all the faces in lighter color would make a great solution else darker paints are going to exhibit a daring outlook.
Also, you need to consider this idea if the walls and ceilings are in direct contact and there is an absence of trims and moldings!
(In the presence of the moldings, you could choose the same hue for walls and ceilings and a CONTRASTING one for the moldings to further protrude them).
A one-paint solution unifies your space and creates a perfectly seamless and soothing experience. Also, it makes it easier to paint since you don’t have to tape the trims, etc.
So, it’s time for you to analyze the perspective of your space and choose the perfect paint color for your ceiling to best maintain balance and harmony!
Condition 4: Should I Paint my Ceilings Darker than the Walls?
Why not?
You should definitely paint your ceilings in a darker shade, especially if the ceiling heights are high and you want to maintain a proportion and make your room look smaller!
Secondly, if you want to add a touch of coziness and intimacy to your room, dark paint color shouldn’t hold you back!
Highly recommended for Modern chic, Contemporary, and Minimalist design styles.
However, do note that you have plenty of natural light hitting the interior surfaces to avoid your space look claustrophobic, dull, and dingy!
In a large room with higher ceilings – tray or coffered, and ample natural light – there is no better option than choosing a trendy, dark-toned paint color.
In the case of focal and accent decorative ceilings, darker paints make the space look sophisticated, rich, and elegant!
This high contrast of darker paint on ceilings and lighter paint on walls will bring down the ceiling, and make your space look smaller and congested than before.
(And that’s why I say – do it only if the room is spacious enough)!
I personally like the look of Sherwin Williams Dovetail and Sherwin Williams Stamped Concrete on the ceilings! Do check out this blog post if you are looking to find the paint.
Condition 5: Should I Paint my Ceilings Lighter than the Walls?
You should paint your ceilings in lighter paint color if the room has a smaller size and a lower ceiling!
Therefore, this low-contrast look will make your space look brighter, taller, and much spacious (if that is what you want to achieve)!
Depending on your personal design preference, paint ceilings in lighter shades are a great option for Scandinavian, Modern Farmhouse, Modern, Boho Chic, Coastal, and Minimalist interior design styles.
If your walls are embellished in cooler tones, the best idea is to choose a lighter chip on the paint swatch.
For example, if you paint your walls in Sherwin Williams Rock Candy, the best ceiling paint to go would be Sherwin Williams Extra White.
Choosing lighter shaded paint colors for the ceiling is a great option if you want to make your space airier, light-headed, comfortable, and welcoming!
Too much bold color on the ceiling might make your space look heavy and detailed!
Choosing lighter colors is also a timeless and longer-living option!
If you keep changing paint colors on your walls frequently – a lighter shade should be good to go in order to avoid painting and repainting the ceiling.
I like Sherwin Williams Alabaster and Sherwin Williams Extra White for a lighter touch-up!
What Paint Color to Choose for Ceilings in the case of Special Architectural Features?
If you have a Hollywood Glam style or an eclectic touch in your space, choosing a ceiling paint color could be challenging!
For pitched or sloped roofs, I would highly recommend choosing a lighter shade.
Also, for all the Farmhouse style lovers, if you have exposed wooden beams, I would recommend you choose lighter and warmer-toned shades to highlight the special architectural feature!
In the case of two to three accents, and bold metallic accents, you might want to go all neutral on the ceilings – darker shade preferably!
I have seen some spaces that have trusses, wooden decorative paneling, or beams running – well, in such cases, all you have to do is consider the tints and tones of the existing structural elements along with the overall aura to figure out the shade that best suits your space and makes it lively or daring – as you prefer!
Do you know what to do?
Well, I am sure by this time you have an idea about what to do with your ceilings!
Firstly, analyzing the scale and perspective of your room is primary.
Does your room look too short and congested? Or are the ceilings unevenly high that make your space uncomfortable and cold?
Well, colors have the answer to them all!
Just consider the LRV’s (remember we talked about it)?
And your design style to figure out what best compliments your space!
