BM Boothbay Gray is definitely a cool-toned gray paint color with a deep blue and green undertone. However, it wouldn’t feel too icy and cold either! Moreover, this cool-toned color can exhibit a refreshing and calming vibe altogether – hence, also a reason why you wouldn’t regret painting the walls in this color.

For instance, try placing a swatch of BM Boothbay Gray against BM Smoke and BM Beach Glass. You’ll observe how muted, subdued, and a not-so-cool and not-warm this paint color is. It neither feels too warm nor too cool. On the other hand, BM Smoke is a soft blue-gray paint color that feels colder than Boothbay Gray. Meanwhile, Beach Glass is warmer due to the major green undertones.
Is Boothbay Gray a Good Exterior Paint Color?
Definitely yes! Boothbay Gray is a great choice for the exteriors of your home. It wouldn’t look washed out and can also make a great timeless appeal. Especially for coastal homes and beach houses, BM Boothbay Gray can be used on the exterior walls. Meanwhile, you can also choose to use this paint color as an accent on the front door and shutters with white walls.
Does Boothbay Gray Look Blue?
Yes, Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray (HC-165) definitely looks blue, specifically as a muted blue-gray or “stormy” gray-blue. It is a chameleon color that leans more blue in bright, natural light and softer, more traditional gray in lower light or at night. It is widely considered a cool, calming, and coastal color.

For instance, try placing a swatch of BM Boothbay Gray against BM Coventry Gray. You’ll observe the notable blue and green undertones in Boothbay Gray as opposed to the neutral gray paint color, BM Coventry Gray. Both are modern grays but the former definitely has a wink of blue and green undertone.
What are the Undertones of Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray?
Boothbay Gray by Benjamin Moore is a steely blue-gray paint color with a deep green undertone. However, the green undertones are quite hidden and subdued. In other words, Boothbay Gray is a modern, muted, and subdued blue-gray paint color that acts like a total chameleon due to the blend of blue, green, and gray. Yes, this color can look blue-gray in certain rooms and blue-green in the other! So, it’s extremely important that you sample the paint color on the walls and determine how it will appear throughout the day. In rooms that receive low incoming natural light, Boothbay Gray Benjamin Moore can come off slightly dingy. Hence, it’s important that you brighten up these rooms with artificial lighting in the form of floor lamps, table lamps, and chandeliers.
Let’s discuss how this color behaves in different lighting conditions –
- In the north-facing rooms, BM Boothbay Gray can come off slightly cool-toned with some depth of gray and blue popping up! Allow considerable natural light to enter the north-facing room.
- In the south-facing rooms, the Boothbay Gray paint color can come off the best! This cool-toned color will blend in with the incoming warmth – hence, creating a wholesome experience overall. It will come off like a lovely pale blue-green color – especially if you have a well-lit south-facing room.
- In the east-facing rooms, BM Boothbay Gray will appear shadowed during the late afternoon hours and quite neutral in the early morning hours.
- In the west-facing rooms, Boothbay Gray by Benjamin Moore can appear muted in the early morning and afternoon hours. In the late afternoon hours, expect this color to brighten the room with blue and green undertones.
BM Boothbay Gray LRV
Light Reflectance Value or LRV is an important aspect to consider when choosing the best neutral paint color for your home. This value determines how light or dark the paint color is – on a scale of 0-100. Hence, the darker the paint color, the lower the LRV is!
The LRV of Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray is 43.26! Hence, falling on the medium end of the scale. This paint color is going to retain its undertones and not look washed out even with excessive incoming natural light. Meanwhile, it’s not too dark as well to overpower the room or make it feel too bold. But it’s always advisable that you allow a considerable amount of natural light to enter the room at all times!
Can I Use Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray For The WHOLE HOUSE?
Definitely, no! I generally recommend a shade of white, an off-white, or a lighter greige or beige as the “whole house color” with some accents in bedrooms and bathrooms. However, if you’re truly fond, BM Boothbay Gray can be used as a ‘whole house color’ but only restricted to coastal homes and beach houses. Else, it may truly be quite intimidating! This whole house color is applicable for larger homes and spaces that receive ample incoming natural light. Definitely not my first choice for the whole house color as BM Boothbay Gray can make your common spaces feel weighted and not too light or breezy! Moreover, BM Boothbay Gray on the common walls of your home can make it difficult to create a cohesive color palette for the other spaces of your home.
For a timeless appeal, I’d recommend that you stick to BM Boothbay Gray as an accent on the kitchen cabinets, mudroom cabinets, front doors, accent furniture, and maybe on all the walls of a well-lit home office or bedroom. Rather, I’d recommend that you choose this color only as an accent on the built-in shelves of your living room or family room, interior doors, or accent wainscoting.
